Primary 3P/T
Term 4
Last week Mrs Yarrow came in to visit the primary 3 classes to talk to us about healthy eating. We learned all about having a balanced diet and having the right amounts of each of the different food groups on our plates at meal times.
We had a lot of fun playing the food game. You need to roll the dice and see which colour you roll. Once you know your colour you go to the big box of food and choose something from the box for that food group, then put it in the correct part of the plate.
Green – Fruit and vegetables Yellow – Bread, rice & pasta Blue – Milk and dairy foods Purple – High fat or calories Pink – Meat, fish, eggs, beans We had a very full plate at the end of the game.
Before we could plant the potatoes we had to build the two potato barrels. This meant:-
· reading and following the instructions · Working together as a team
They looked good when we had finished.
Our seed potatoes had begun to sprout. They were ready to be planted. We separated them into two equal sized groups, one for each barrel.
The next step was to choose a good place for the barrels to stay. We decided that at our classroom window would be the best place because it gets lots of sun and it is a bit sheltered. It also meant that we could see how the potatoes were doing.
We filled the bottom quarter of each barrel with soil and carefully placed each seed potato in by hand. We made sure that they were well spaced out and that the shoot was the right way up.
The seed potatoes do look very strange. It is hard to believe that each shrivelled up potato will produce a bushy plant and hopefully another ten or more potatoes.
