Sexual Health Education Sexual Health and Relationships Education is an integral part of the curriculum at Bridge of Allan Primary and the purpose of this leaflet is to let you know what your child covers at each stage.
Many people think that sexual health education in schools is just about how the body changes as children grow up, about sexual activity and about how babies are born. These are important issues but the programme is set in a much broader framework of personal and social education, religious and moral education and health education. Importantly it includes learning about:
· Attitudes and values · How to manage and express your feelings · Personal safety · Healthy living and healthy lifestyles · Enjoying positive relationships · Peer pressure – bullying, the media etc · How/where to access help and support.
The Early Stages P.1-P.3
At the early stages, the children will:
· Show an awareness of how their bodies change – baby, toddler, child, adult · Recognise how people care for them and demonstrate an awareness of family relationships · Recognise differences in size and shapes of bodies and name body parts · Recognise similarities and differences between themselves and others · Understand that they are continually developing feelings and begin to explore strategies to keep themselves safe
The Middle Stages P.4 and P.5
At the middle stages, the children will:
· Recognise ways in which individuals are unique · Name the life processes common to humans and other animals, including the main organs of the human body · Show safe ways of dealing with a range of situations, particularly those which may present risk · Learn to communicate with others through a developing vocabulary, in relation to emotions and feelings
The Upper Stages P.6 and P.7
At the upper stages, the children will continue to develop their knowledge of life cycles, human growth, change and development
In Primary Six, the class teacher will deliver a series of lessons on puberty and menstruation with support from the school nurse. Leaflets supporting the work in the classroom will be provided for pupils to take home.
In Primary Seven They will: · revisit the main changes which occur during puberty · describe the stages in human reproduction · show knowledge and understanding of their own developing sexuality and recognise the link between body image, self-worth and external influences · demonstrate responsible strategies to deal with a range of situations and emotions in relationships
We can suggest resources for use at home to complement the work ongoing in school.
