MATHS

Mental Maths

  • Mental Maths is undertaken daily, prior to the main maths teaching.

  • Mental Maths develops the quick recall of facts and employs interactive techniques.

  •  Questioning is differentiated to ensure that each child can contribute.

  • Children can answer by show me techniques such as number fans, number cards and whiteboards.

Problem Solving

·        Problem Solving is taught once a week as a class lesson.

·   There are nine problem solving strategies and each is taught to allow children to select appropriately and independently.

·    Children can experience problem solving as a whole class, in trios, pairs and groups, appointing a person to report back to the class, about how they have tackled the problem.

·    Children are reminded that the process of the task is as important as the final answer.

·    The plenary session gives groups an opportunity to explain their thinking.

Key Features for Learning and Teaching.

·        Lessons will have clear Learning Intentions that are shared with the pupils.

·    Direct teaching is interactive and engages pupils in effective learning.

·    Quality time will be spent on explaining, asking questions and sharing learning.

·    Pupils are regularly reminded of the relevance and importance of mental maths and problem solving in everyday life.

Strategies  To Be Tried At Bridge of Allan Primary School

As part of our staff development, we have been working on the following key areas:-

  • Marking Less to Achieve More.

  • Sharing Learning Intentions.

  • Pupil self assessment and peer Assessment.

Staff have been applying a variety of strategies. These include:-

  • Increased wait time .

  • ‘Thumbs Up/Traffic Lights’ to determine self grouping.

  •  What the teacher looks for?

  • Think, pair, share.

  • Pupils swapping work.

  • Oral feedback on improvement strategies.

Clearly not all classes will be involved with all of these strategies all of the time.  Each teacher will be trying two or three in selected areas of the curriculum.

All of these will add to an even better quality of education and a more enjoyable school experience for all involved.
